The purpose of this section is to place difficult verse within the various schools of thought and poetry from about 1910 to the present. None of these pages are intended to be definitive but they do try to show some of the rationale for difficult verse without getting bogged down in the finer ideological details. It is also fully accepted that many of these terms are still contested and that a precise description is always going to be difficult.
